When should my child move from a bowl to a plate?

Most children can begin using a plate alongside their bowl from around 12 months, or whenever they’re starting to use cutlery to stab and cut food. The doddl plate is specifically designed to bridge this transition — its raised back keeps food on the plate (like a bowl), while the wide flat front gives easy cutlery access (like an adult plate). Many families use both the doddl bowl and plate at the same time for different meals.

Why isn’t the doddl plate divided into sections like other children’s plates?

This is a deliberate, expert-informed design choice. Sectioned plates limit children’s ability to practise proper cutlery skills because there isn’t enough space to scoop or cut. They can also contribute to food sensory issues by reinforcing separation of foods. The doddl plate looks like a grown-up plate because it’s designed to prepare your child for adult tableware, not delay the transition.

What does the coloured splat in the centre of the plate do?

The central splat has a developmental purpose — it draws your child’s eye to the middle of the plate, where chopping and cutting should happen. This visual cue helps children learn correct food positioning naturally and makes the plate engaging and recognisably theirs at the family table.

Does the doddl plate stay in place on the table?

Yes. The doddl plate has a non-slip rim on the base that keeps it firmly in place on tables, highchair trays, and placemats. Unlike suction plates (which toddlers often enjoy pulling off), the non-slip design supports the stage when children are learning table manners and independence.

Is the doddl plate microwave and dishwasher safe?

Yes to both. The doddl plate is dishwasher safe and microwave safe for gentle reheating (do not exceed 80°C — suitable for warming food, not cooking). It’s made from high-quality BPA-free and phthalate-free materials with biodegradable properties, is unbreakable, and is certified safe to FDA standards.
