Clever kids cutlery by doddl

How clever?

Having faced the same issues with mealtimes as parents all around the world, we spent months exploring the world of children’s cutlery. It helped us understand the challenges children face using utensils not specifically designed for them. It also showed us the benefits the right cutlery could offer for development. After-all imagine if young children could learn at every single mealtime? Three meals a day, every day – that’s a lot of opportunity to learn.

The development of doddl.

Partnering with child development experts, we armed ourselves with all the research and testing that showed:

  • Children’s cutlery are just small versions of adult cutlery. They are not designed for a child’s limited dexterity and coordination.

  • The long slim handles force the continued use of the palmer grip – the basic grip a baby has – which makes it very awkward for children to effectively hold and control.

  • The length of the cutlery makes it a real challenge for children to get food from the plate or bowl into their mouths.

  • Children’s knives are blunt and ineffective and rely on the wrist strength a young child doesn’t have.
Having identified the issues, we explored how to make it easier for children to learn to eat with cutlery as well as how we could help children develop their skills and ability at mealtimes.

We wanted doddl to offer a range of benefits:

Having identified what the basic issue was, we then explored the developmental side of cutlery and mealtimes.

Both socially and physically they offer young children huge opportunities for development. There were multiple considerations for us as we started designing:

  • Ease of use for right now – to make mealtimes easier, more successful and more enjoyable for young children – quickly!
  • Help prepare children for the transition to adult cutlery, so they could move easily from children’s cutlery to adult cutlery when they are ready.
  • Encourage development, progressing children’s skills and ability, including strengthening their pincer grip, building dexterity, coordination and increasing confidence.
